Arkansas State Indians - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The 2006 campaign did not produce the results the Indians had in mind, as they finished 4-3 in league play behind Troy and Middle Tennessee State, and a disappointing 6-6 mark overall. Arkansas State should find itself in better position with seven returning starters back on both offense and defense.
Leading passer Corey Leonard (1,321 yards) is back under center, as are top threats tailback Reggie Arnold (1,109 yards) and primary wideout Kevin Jones. While Arnold will assume the role of starting running back, Cedric Wilkerson and Preston Brown both jumped into the picture after successful spring performances and should help to deepen the backfield this fall. Like a majority of Sun-Belters, offense was a problem for the Indians, ranking 88th in total yards (312.2) and scoring a shade over 15 per game. The biggest issue will be replacing three starting offensive linemen, none more important than First Team all-conference center Tanner Jenkins. ASU is capable of presenting a balanced attack, but need to find the end zone more consistently if they are going to stay close to the top of the league.
Defense was definitely a strong suit for ASU, ranking 36th in the nation with 309.4 YPG allowed and surrendering 24.1 PPG. Leading tackler Tyrell Johnson will carry the bulk of the work at safety, while top sack man Koby McKinnon and free safety Khayyam Burns help the cause. The duo of Stanley Wakwe and Brian Flagg on the end of the defensive line should make some waves come this fall and will be key to stopping the run. ASU plays just three conference road games, but will need to avoid getting banged-up against several national powerhouses before they hit league play.
