Vanderbilt Commodores - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

Vanderbilt has now suffered through 24 consecutive losing seasons after last year’s 4-8 campaign.  They are also a morbid 15-43 in five seasons under Coach Bobby Johnson. There were signs of improvement with two victories over Tennessee the last two years and a victory over Georgia last year and close losses to Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida. With 17 returning starters, Vandy has its best chance at a winning season in a long time.

The offense has nine returning starters including junior QB Chris Nickson who tallied a 15/13 TD/INT ratio last year and led the team in rushing, never a good sign. WR Earl Bennett is back from his stellar 92-catch season. The return of injured tailback Jeff Jennings will add another weapon to the backfield, while senior tackle Brian Stamper has been granted another year of eligibility due to injury. That should help the O-line, which itself is returning four other starters. The defense has improved with the return of tackle Theo Horrocks and end Curtis Gatewood. Add linebackers Jonathan Goff and Marcus Buggs and the front seven should make the Commodore defense a potential force in the SEC. The secondary returns four starters but depth has left some defensive placements still undetermined. Special teams will look to Bennett on the returns and to PK Bryant Hahnfeldt and P Brett Upson.

The Commodores have a tough road schedule this season with trips to Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. This year is likely to be Vanderbilt’s best season in years, and certainly the best ever under Johnson.  With a bit of luck and an upset or two, the Commodores could be a dark horse in the SEC East.
