Tennessee Volunteers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
It’s been almost a decade since Tennessee won the SEC and the national championship, a fact that coach Phil Fulmer is most likely reminded of every day. Last year the Volunteers lost four games; one to Florida by a point, LSU by four points, a devastating loss at Arkansas, and finally, to Penn State in the Outback Bowl. This year they must replace 11 starters, including their three best receivers, the left side of the offensive line, and six players on defense. A tall order indeed.
Last year’s offense ranked 36th overall, but only 96th in rushing with 110 YPG. The most important returning starter on offense would definitely be the solid senior QB Erik Ainge (19/9 TD/INT ratio last year). The Vols’ offense made progress this spring on the line, as Fulmer is looking for them to be more physical. Receivers Kenny O’Neal and Brent Vinson have been brought in to fill the void left by graduating players. Guards Anthony Parker and Ramon Foster showed signs of maturity throughout spring practices.
2007’s defense ranked 50th, but only five starters return this year. One positive change sees Jerod Mayo moving from weak side linebacker to the middle. As well, spring practices have produced good things from tackles Demonte’ Bolden, Dan Williams, and J.T. Mapu. The Vols are 137-41 under Fulmer but until Tennessee wins another SEC title, he will continue to be on the hot seat as expectations continue to be sky-high. The entire season could hinge on how the Volunteers handle the first month, which includes road bouts at Cal (who will seek revenge from last season’s loss at Tennesee) and Florida. Toughness is the key to Tennessee football and if the front lines can perform the way Coach Fulmer intends, then Tennessee could be a force in the SEC this year.
