LSU Tigers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The promising LSU squad fell out of the national championship race last year after losing to Auburn and Florida by Week 6 but bounced back and won their last seven, going out on a high note by stomping Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. LSU can certainly claim to be the best team that did not play in the national title game last year. They are returning 14 starters this season, eight to a defense poised to become a dominant force in the SEC.
Last year’s 11th-ranked offense has six starters returning, including three on the O-line. The overhauled offensive coaching staff looks like they’ve filled holes left by the loss of QB JaMarcus Russell and two receivers, with Early Doucet and QBs Ryan Perrilloux and Matt Flynn still competing for spots. Flynn has had some success in the past, including an impressive Peach Bowl a couple of years ago. The running game will again be shared by four different backs this year.
The defense that ranked third last year has eight key starters returning for ’07. All-American candidate senior tackle Glenn Dorsey leads what may be the best front seven in the SEC. Both cornerbacks also return, but the Tigers lost four-year starters LaRon Landry and Jessie Daniels at the safety positions. Special teams will be led by the speedy Trindon Holliday, who fills numerous roles beyond his return duties. The punter job is still open with the loss of Chris Jackson. Their schedule is one of the better ones, and they may go undefeated on the road in ‘07. The tough games will all be in Death Valley, making the Tigers an even more dangerous team this year and a legitimate national title threat.
