Florida Gators - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

Well that was quick.

The Gators hired coach Urban Meyer to bring a national championship to Gainesville and he didn’t waste any time doing just that, winning in only his second season at Florida. This team didn’t get the respect it deserved until its 41-14 national championship throttling over the favored Buckeyes, even though they earlier handled LSU, Georgia, and then Arkansas in the SEC title game. This year’s offensive squad has six starters returning, including three on the O-line and some capable receivers in Andre Caldwell, Louis Murphy, and Percy Harvin. In his freshman year, phenom QB Tim Tebow impressed as a part-time backup, but he must step up and prove himself in a full-time role this year. Look for Florida to work a two-QB system again this year. That means that Cameron Newton, Bryan Waggener, or John Brantley will have the opportunity for playing time and starts against weaker teams.  There are also still some questions at the tailback position that need to be answered by September.

The defense lost more players this year than any other SEC defense. They lost  both starting defensive tackles, all three starting linebackers and three quarters of the backfield.  Three juniors were lost to the NFL draft leaving only two starters - DE Derrick Harvey and SS Tony Joiner. Fortunately, five new replacements have some starting experience. The defensive line has size issues and the lack of experience could make the start of the season tough for the defense. Special teams will see a new punter to replace Eric Wilbur that will most likely be true freshman Chas Henry. Sophomore return specialist Brandon James was suspended indefinitely last June, and if he remains suspended the Gators will have to go with one of their running backs for returns. If defense wins championships, then Florida has holes to fill before talking about a BCS repeat.
