Auburn Tigers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Last season, the Tigers went 11-2, beat the eventual national champs, and defeated Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl. That’s a hard act to follow.
Auburn is 33-5 over the last three years, so things are being done right on-and-off the field. The solid defense that ranked 19th overall last year under the direction of Will Meschamp should be similarly equipped in 2007, with seven starting players returning. The spots on defense that are open from last year will be filled by returning experienced reserve players. Auburn’s offense struggled last year, ranking 76th under Al Borges. Only four starters on offense return this year, with the offensive line losing all four starters. Line coach Hugh Nall has been trying different combinations up front and will continue to do so in the preseason until he finds the right combination. QB Brandon Cox has shown maturity in his spring practices. He returns after compiling a 13/9 TD ratio last year as a junior, and has looked flawless this spring, hitting receivers Rod Smith and Robert Dunn at-will in practice games. That makes the loss of receiver Courtney Tailor less painful than anticipated. The loss of RB Kenny Irons first seemed like it may cause some difficulty for the team but Mario Fannin and Tristan Davis both look like they can be steady backs for the Tigers.
The toughest thing that Auburn will have to face is their brutal schedule. Road trips to Florida, Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia will test the rookie players. If they can win two of those games, they should contend for the West Division, and as Florida proved last year, winning against SEC teams is the best way to get into the BCS mix and earn a national title.
