Arizona State Sun Devils - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

The Sun Devils welcome a new head coach this year in former NFL coach and Pac 10 journeyman Dennis Erickson. He will try to return the team to prominence with the help of returning quarterback Rudy Carpenter, who boasts a 2.5/1 TD/INT ration in 18 starts, and running back Ryan Torian, who rushed for 1,200 years last season.

Eight other starters from last year's squad join Torian and Carpenter on offense including the man who protected Carpenter's blind side last year, Brandon Rodd and Mike Pollak, the team's centre. Last year's leading receiver, Michael Jones, is also back. Jones saw limited time in spring drills due to injury but did play in the team's spring game. Also back is Rudy Burgess, a senior receiver who also put in time last season at cornerback and returning punts. On the other side of the ball, ASU returns six defensive starters. Linebackers Robert James and Travis Goethel are back as is defensive end Dexter Davis, the team's top freshman last season. Davis led the team with six sacks and 10.5 tackles-for-losses. Defensive back Josh Barrett returns after a strong season that saw him record a team-leading 82 tackles. As the team's reigning defensive MVP, he will be leaned on heavily.

Nothing will be easy for the Sun Devils, but if their prime-time players can step up and Erickson can get the most out of what he has to work with, the team should be more than a mark for the top-tier squads in the conference. Coach Erickson boasts championship pedigree (he won with Miami in 1989 and 1991), but he won’t expect to win one anytime soon in the desert. But that’s not to say the Sun Devils won’t be an improved team in 2007 or that recruiting isn’t a lot easier with him at the helm.
