Navy Midshipmen - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Midshipmen won their last four regular-season games before falling to Boston College in a 25-24 nail-biter in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Seven starters return to an offensive unit that led the country in rushing offense in 2006. So Coach Paul Johnson will probably stick with a heavy dose of quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada pitching to either Adam Ballard or Reggie Campbell in the spread-option. Of course, this task will be made more difficult with three new starters up front for the Midshipmen.
Campbell, with 244 yards, is also Navy’s leading receiver, and he can break a play wide open very quickly. On defense, Johnson could have some problems with only two players back from the 2006 unit which ranked 61st in the nation. Three of their top four linebackers are gone, leaving Clint Sovie (61 tackles) behind a defensive line that has been completely retooled. The Midshipmen were 38th in the country in rushing defense, and this makes the graduation of Rob Caldwell, David Mahoney and Tyler Tidwell tougher to swallow. Rashawn King (50 tackles) and Ketric Buffin (11 tackle, one interception) will be asked to hold together the secondary. Another area of concern is in kick return, where they were 116th last season. Campbell will again take those duties, but the blocking has to create holes so he can take advantage of his explosive open-field skills.
The Midshipmen travel to face 2006’s Cinderella story, Rutgers, in the season’s second game. Other than a late-October visit from Wake Forest before a showdown at Notre Dame in early November, the Midshipmen’s schedule is extremely favorable. If Navy’s defense can gel, Navy should be looking at another bowl appearance in 2007. And just as important on the campus, this would continue recent bragging rights over Independent military rival Army as well.
