UNLV Rebels - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The only running done by the Runnin’ Rebels last year was a sprint to a horrendous 2-10 record. They tied for last in the conference with a single MWC victory and managed just a single win outside the conference. While quarterback Rocky Hinds is back with a bunch of others, his absence was noticeable at spring practice because of a knee injury.
Travis Dixon is the backup plan, but Hinds is more than capable of partially turning things around if he can recover fully in time. He, with leading rusher David Peeples (519 yards) and top wideout Ryan Wolfe (911 yards), have everything to improve upon from a dreadful 2006. Wolfe and Casey Flair totaled 122 catches a year ago and combined for over 1,700 yards and nine scores. Hinds showed the ability to get them the ball at times, however he must improve his turnover ratio (8/13) if the team is going to win games. Peeples carried the ball just 133 times, but he did crack the end zone seven times. Seven defenders return to go with the seven on offense, but significant improvements are critical on this side of the ball. UNLV ranked 96th in total yards allowed, 94th in rushing yards given up and they were even worse when it came to scoring defense, ranking 109th in the nation with nearly 32 PPG allowed.
The biggest loss is star corner Eric Wright and it could be freshman Quinton Pointer emerging from an impressive spring to take his place, Top tackler and interception man Jay Stagg is gone, but the front seven should be more experienced with the trio of linebackers Beau Bell, Jason Beauchamp and defensive end Jeremy Geathers leading the charge. With 15 starters back, it should be interesting to see if the Rebels can run back toward respectability in 2007.
