San Diego State Aztecs - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Winless in non-conference action and just 3-5 in the MWC, 2006 was a complete mess at San Diego State. And it might be a stretch to think it gets much better in just one season. The offense was downright anemic, ranking 108th in total yards, 107th in passing and 80th in rushing. While on paper that looks brutal, the Aztecs’ top quarterback Kevin O’Connell was hampered all season with injuries and that forced that hand of Chuck Long to use players ill-prepared for the job. As of now, the senior has the job, and if he can stay on the field, things should improve steadily just from his presence and leadership alone.
Top tailback Atiyyah Henderson is also back, having rushed for 797 yards in ’06. Henderson supplied just one touchdown on the ground, and he’ll need to raise that stat line if San Diego State is to make strides rushing the pigskin. Looking to help the cause as well are the team’s top two receivers Brett Swain and Chaz Schilens. The duo combined for 81 catches and over 1,000 yards with two scores each. The offense as a whole averaged 270 yards and just 14 PPG, so things should be better than those miserable numbers. While 10 men are back on offense, only four return on defense. Leading tackler linebacker Joe Martin is gone, as is cornerback Donny Baker, who led the squad in interceptions. Both Baker and Terrell Maze must be replaced, as the team has identified the secondary as its biggest concern approaching this season.
Defensive linemen Antwan Applewhite and Nick Osborn will lead the front seven. The Aztecs still have work to do, looking to improve their 74th-ranked defense in yards allowed. Even worse was their points allowed, giving up 27.1 PPG to rank 94th in the nation.
