Toledo Rockets - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Rockets managed to win three conference games in 2006, but finished the season with a record of 5-7 overall, which was only good enough for fifth in the MAC West. Coach Tom Amstutz welcomes back 16 starters split evenly on each side of the ball. He will have to finally decide on a starting quarterback after splitting time between Clint Cochran and Aaron Opelt. Cochran began 2006 as the starter, but a knee injury limited his productivity, which gave Opelt an opportunity to snatch away playing time. Whichever player Amstutz chooses will have great support in the form of running back Jalen Parmele (207 attempts, 1,131 yards, 8 TD).
Most of the offensive line returns, which is a good sign for Parmele. The bad sign will be if neither quarterback can get the job done through the air as Toledo can expect opposing defenses to stack eight players in the box to stop Parmele. In that case, it would be extremely tough to replicate last season’s 40th-ranked rushing offense. Defensively, the Rockets were 72nd in total defense, but 47th in pass defense and 60th in scoring defense. Safety Bobby Church had a phenomenal freshman season, and he leads a fast and physical secondary featuring fellow safety Tyrell Herbert and cornerback Nigel Morris. Greg Hay (66 tackles) appears ready to fill Mike Alston’s spot at linebacker, but it will be interesting to see if Hay is as adept at pass-rushing as Alston was.
The second-half schedule for the Rockets is brutal, as they host Ohio and Eastern Michigan before heading to Ball State and Bowling Green to end the season. There seems to be enough experience for the Rockets to flirt with .500 in 2007, but they will need to remain injury-free while catching some breaks along the way.
