Miami (Ohio) RedHawks - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Redhawks were 2-10 in the 2006 season, tied for last in the MAC East with Buffalo. But those numbers were deceiving and could point to better days this season. To their credit, the Redhawks were only blown out twice and they were done in by a lack of offense. Coach Shane Montgomery returns eight starters to that group, and quarterback Mike Kokal (58.6%, 2,419 yards, 14 TD, 8 INT) is one of the nation’s most underrated players. He does not turn the ball over and is consistent.
Kokal will have to get by without receiver Ryne Robinson, who graduated with a host of school records. Freshman Armand Robinson (no relation) had rave reviews after spring practice with his blazing speed, and he can open up the field so the Redhawks can perk up their ground game (which ranked an abysmal 109th in the nation).
The offensive line is another area of great concern for Montgomery, as they were second worst in the nation in sacks allowed. Kokal will need even more protection as he tries to find a new No. 1 target. Seven starters are back on the defensive side of the ball, and they will look to shore up that 101st-ranked rushing defense. Linebackers Joey Hudson and Clayton Mullins should be fine in the middle, as long as the front four can tie up opposing offensive linemen. Joe Coniglio and will be counted on for this task. The secondary has to do a better job of forcing turnovers, as Hudson’s five interceptions led the team, followed by Mullins and graduated linebacker Joey Card. Jerrid Gaines (49 tackles, two interceptions) is the best of an erratic group in the secondary.
The Redhawks open at Ball State, Minnesota and Colorado, before ending the season at Akron and Ohio. The Redhawks need a few breaks to reach five wins in 2007.
