Buffalo Bulls - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Coach Turner Gill was thrown to the wolves in his rookie season with the Bulls, as the team finished with a 2-10 record, recording only one conference win. The bright side is that Gill returns 17 starters on both sides of the ball for 2007, including eight on offense. Quarterback Drew Willy (59.7%, 1,391 yards, 6 TD, 6 INT) has another year of experience under his belt, but he needs some protection from an offensive line that welcomes back four starters.
The offensive line was 114th in the country in sacks allowed, and Willy can be accurate if he is given time to make his reads. Jamie Starks (175 attempts, 704 yards, 6 TD) is the main candidate to solve Buffalo’s rushing problems, as they ranked 107th on the ground. However, the onus is again on the offensive line to open holes for Starks. Defensively, the Bulls were horrible in 2007, finishing 100th in total defense, 109th in rushing defense, and 116th in scoring defense. Nine starters are back, including Ollice Ervin and his 96 tackles. He will be counted on to replace Jeff Bublavi as the big-play linebacker. Mike Newton had a spectacular freshman season, and returns at cornerback to bolster the secondary.
As with a number of MAC teams, though, the Bulls give up a lot of big plays and teams can score on them in a hurry, putting a lot of pressure on the offense. Buffalo begins the season with three consecutive road games at Rutgers, Temple and Penn State, but Ohio, Akron and Bowling Green are all at home. A tough road game at Kent State wraps up the campaign. Things should be better in 2007 for Gill, as long as the offensive line does not allow as many sacks as they did last season.
