UAB Blazers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Blazers stumbled to a 3-9 record in 2006, hitting the skids with a six-game losing run to conclude the season. Coach Neil Callaway will have a lot to do in his first season at the helm of UAB, and his first job will be to fix an offense that ranked 95th in the nation. The problem is, there are only four returnees from last season.
Sam Hunt will get first crack at the starting quarterback position, but he was far from consistent in spring practice. Running back is also a worry, with Dan Burks and Corey White gone. Brothers Rashad and T.J. Slaughter are very talented, but a lack of experience could come into play later in the season. There will also be three new starters up front, and with receivers dropping passes in spring practice, Hunt could be in for a rough initiation. On defense, the story does not get much better for Callaway. Four starters are back from the 83rd-ranked unit in 2006, and this season’s crew will be led by defensive back duo of Will Dunbar (65 tackles, three interceptions) and Durrell Fuqua. All-conference defensive end Larry McSwain has graduated and taken his six sacks with him, and the defensive line now lacks production and depth across the board. Joe Henderson (62 tackles) is going to have to hold the linebacking unit together while Callaway figures out who will surround him.
The Blazers start out with an extremely difficult back-to-back at Michigan State and Florida State, and then play three straight conference games against Houston and Southern Mississippi and East Carolina. It could result in an 0-5 start, which would doom the Blazers. UAB, from their coach to their players, simply do not appear to have enough experience to compete in the C-USA this season.
