Memphis Tigers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

The Tigers were dead last in the C-USA East last season with a record of 2-10, but to their credit Memphis was only blown out in three games.  Quarterback Martin Hankins, who threw for 2,550 yards and 18 scores, is one of seven returning starters to the offensive unit for coach Tommy West. Hankins sparked a group which finished 39th in the nation in passing offense and he gets backfield mate Joseph Doss (224 attempts, 910 yards, 7 TD) back to give the Tigers a strong ground game.

Duke Calhoun returns as a credible target at wide receiver.  The offensive line was 10th in the NCAA in sacks allowed, and they will need another performance like that to give Hankins the time he needs to look downfield.  Defense is where the Tigers had their struggles. They ranked 111th in the country in total defense and 116th in pass efficiency defense.  Defensive back Brandon McDonald led the team in tackles and interceptions, and he will be a massive loss to a secondary that was torched last season.  Greg Terrell and Jada Brown give the Tigers a pair of physical defensive ends, while Heath Grant (81 tackles) and Greg Jackson (69 tackles) will be asked to lead the linebacking unit.

On special teams, both return units were in the Top 45 in the country and receiver Michael Grandberry is a good weapon.  Marshall comes to town Oct. 2, while back-to-back games against East Carolina and at Southern Mississippi will pose a conference problem for the Tigers. They have a long way to go before they rise as the cream of the C-USA, and their offense is going to have to carry the load until West can figure out what to do about his secondary.  Look for high-scoring games involving the Tigers in 2007.
