Central Florida Golden Knights - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Golden Knights flipped in 2006. As in, they flipped their record from their 2005 season. And at 4-8, it was disappointing after an 8-4 mark and a bowl appearance the year before. The Golden Knights do have 17 returning starters, which should bode well for Coach George O’Leary.
Kyle Israel (65.1%, 1,420 yards, 6 TD, 5 INT) has the starting quarterback job all to himself after sharing duties with Steven Moffett, but someone will have to fill the big shoes left by graduated receiver Mike Walker. Kevin Smith, who carried 206 times for 934 yards and seven scores, is also back to give Israel a hand out of the backfield. Nine starters return on the defensive side of the ball, and the Golden Knights should improve last season’s atrocious showing (they were 106th in the nation in total defense). UCF ranked 111th in passing defense while allowing almost 29 PPG. Few teams can succeed giving up that many points and UCF was no exception. When defensive backs (Johnell Neal, Jason Venson and Joe Burnett) are your leading tacklers, there are problems with the front seven. UCF ranked eighth in punt returns in 2006, and Burnett is back to provide a dangerous weapon in the battle of field position. Michael Torres and Jake Howard give the Golden Knights a strong kicking game as well.
On the plus side, the Golden Knights ended the 2006 season by winning two of their last three games. But they begin the 2007 campaign with a tough test at North Carolina State followed by a visit from Texas. The Golden Knights also managed to avoid defending conference champion Houston on their schedule. Things should flip around slightly for the Golden Knights in 2007 (likely not back to 8-4), if their defense can get its act together.
