Texas Longhorns - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Texas was 10-3 last season and won a bowl game. But on the heels of an undefeated national championship season, both of those achievements seemed a little lacking in Longhorn Land. Mack Brown brings back six starters on each side of the ball from a team that beat Iowa 26-24 in the Alamo Bowl. But none is as important as quarterback Colt McCoy, the young pivot who had an inconsistent 2006. When he was on, McCoy showed that he was on his way to becoming one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
McCoy will also have a full arsenal of weapons in dynamic Limas Sweed, Nate Jones, Jordan Shipley and Jermichael Finley. The offensive line returns three starters, but both guards will be new to a unit that ranked 22nd in the nation in total offense. Defensively, the Longhorns took a big hit in the secondary with the departures of Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin and Tarell Brown. Drew Kelson will make the move to safety from linebacker, which shows the Longhorns are prepared to juggle personnel to start the season. The line is also a question mark with the exits of Tim Crowder and Brian Robison. There will be a lot of pressure on linebackers Robert Killebrew, Scott Derry and Rashad Bobino to carry the unit through the first part of the season.
The Longhorns also ranked 22nd in total defense last season, but equaling that performance could be out of reach. Texas hosts Oklahoma in the annual Red River Shootout in Week 5 and the schedule only gets tougher from there. Texas faces Nebraska and Texas Tech and visits Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. McCoy will be told to air it out as much as possible, and the Longhorns should be in the hunt for a BCS bid.
