Oklahoma Sooners - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

The Sooners roared to an 11-3 record in 2006, coming away with the Big 12 South title before losing that 43-42 overtime classic to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Coach Bob Stoops will have eight returning starters on offense, but the losses of quarterback Paul Thompson and running back Adrian Peterson will be difficult to overcome. Had Peterson returned for his senior season at Oklahoma this year, he would be a lock for the All-American team and a Heisman front-runner. But Stoops is confident that Allen Patrick and DeMarco Murray can handle the load.

The quarterback position is up in the air, but the starter will be protected by four returning starters on the offensive line. The Sooners also have lots of options in the aerial attack via Malcolm Kelly and Manuel Johnson, so Oklahoma should not drop significantly from its 40th-place ranking in total offense. The defense ranked 16th in the nation in total defense, and it should be another long year for Oklahoma opponents as seven starters are back.  The Sooners allowed just over 17 PPG, and a lot of that was due to their stingy secondary which is back intact. However, Stoops will look to fill the shoes of C.J. Ah You and Larry Birdine up front. Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Rufus Alexander is also gone, which puts a dent in the Sooners’ 16th-ranked, run-stuffing armor.

The Sooners host the Miami Hurricanes in the second week of the season before traveling for a showdown with Texas in the fifth game.  A back-to-back at Texas Tech and against Oklahoma State provides the final hurdle for the Sooners, who should have enough to reach the bowls again. But they will have their hands full with Texas and face a tough challenge to retain the Big 12 South crown.
