Nebraska Cornhuskers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Cornhuskers returned to prominence at 9-5 in 2006, coming in first in the Big 12’s North Division. But a 17-14 loss to Auburn in the Cotton Bowl put a damper on the campaign. Coach Bill Callahan welcomes back five starters on both sides of the ball, and the Huskers will look to Sam Keller to replace Zac Taylor at quarterback. Keller transferred from Arizona State and is a very talented player, but Callahan is waiting until the fall to name Keller as his starter until he is more familiar with a Nebraska offense that is much different than past editions.
The Cornhuskers were 23rd in both passing and rushing offense, and they are usually known for their ground game. The receiving unit took a huge hit when Maurice Purify was suspended indefinitely by Callahan after two incidents involving the law during the offseason. The talented receiver was a big part of Callahan’s plans, and the onus is now on Terrence Nunn, Frantz Hardy and Todd Peterson to pick up the slack. The O-line is very inexperienced, and this could hurt Nebraska early in the season. The Cornhuskers will also have to replace their entire defensive line, and this may have been the defense’s best group last season. But the linebacking unit is very deep, and the secondary is anchored by seniors Tierre Green and Bryan Wilson.
Callahan would like to see a boost from his return teams, as the punt (69th) and kickoff (112th) teams were in the bottom half of the NCAA last season. The Cornhuskers head to Wake Forest before hosting USC within the first three weeks of the season, and back-to-back road games at Texas and Kansas late in the year will be a challenge. The Cornhuskers should compete for the Big 12 crown once again in 2007.
