Kansas State Wildcats - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Wildcats were hammered 37-10 to Rutgers in the Texas Bowl, but still feel their 7-6 record in 2006 was a success. Kansas State’s season included a big 45-42 win over Texas at home. Coach Ron Prince welcomes back seven offensive starters to a group that ranked 85th in the nation in total offense, and Josh Freeman will have another chance to secure the starting quarterback job. Freeman was wildly inconsistent last season, and will have plenty of competition for the role. He should have some help in the form of the running-back duo of James Johnson and Leon Patton, but the offensive line is in disarray.
Jordy Nelson seems to be the only productive receiver on the Wildcats’ roster, and Prince is hoping another player steps up between now and the fall as Nelson was plagued wit injuries last season. The defense brings back six starters from last season’s 70th-ranked group, and the defensive line is very strong with Ian Campbell and Rob Jackson patrolling the end positions. The secondary is also very deep, including safety Marcus Watts who led the team in interceptions despite missing five games.
The linebacking corps could see some players switch positions, and this could be the only hitch for Prince, who is looking to implement a 3-4 scheme for his unit. Prince is also pleased to have the nation’s best kickoff-return unit, with Patton and defensive back Justin McKinney leading the charge. The Wildcats open the season with a visit to hostile Auburn before traveling to Texas for the fourth game of the year. The Longhorns will be anxious to avenge last season’s loss, so the Wildcats should expect a war. A November back-to-back at Iowa State and Nebraska could seal the Wildcats’ fate. The Wildcats will look to get back to the bowls, but the key will be the consistency of Freeman.
