Kansas Jayhawks - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

The Jayhawks recovered to win three of their last four games in 2006 to salvage a record of 6-6, including 3-5 in the Big 12. Mark Mangino has an interesting dilemma to sort through at quarterback, where Kerry Meier and Todd Reesing are both back to compete for the starting role.  The Jayhawks were ranked 33rd in the country in total offense last season with both at the helm, but you have to think that Mangino would like to name a definitive starter for continuity’s sake.

In all, six starters are back on offense, but only two of those starters are up front.  This could also throw a wrench into Mangino’s quarterback plans.  A big void was left with the graduation of leading rusher Jon Cornish, and he will not be easily replaced.  Receivers Dexton Fields and Marcus Henry will play a larger part in the offense this season. Eight starters return on the defensive side of the ball, and they must improve on their pass defense which was ranked dead last in the country. Aqib Talib, Kendrick Harper and Anthony Webb should bolster the secondary, and they will be aided by a strong unit up front.

James McClinton is being touted as a breakout player at defensive tackle, and the promising Todd Haselhorst is healthy and eager to show what he can do.  Kansas’ special teams were good all around in 2006, and the majority of that group is back in the battle for field position. The Jayhawks can avoid a replay of their slow start last season as they start with home games against Central Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana, Toledo and Florida International. A tricky back-to-back at Colorado and Texas Tech will be an obstacle. If Kansas can improve against the pass, they could sneak into a lower-level bowl this season.
