Baylor Bears - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
The Bears were a respectable 3-5 in the Big 12, but finished 2006 with a bland overall slate of 4-8. Coach Guy Morriss will have his hands full matching that record in 2007, as only four starters return from the nation’s 11th-ranked passing attack. Quarterback Shawn Bell will have to be replaced, as well as his top two receivers and running backs. One comfort will be having three of those starters back on the offensive line, which provides a solid foundation for Morriss’ spread offense. Morriss will have to improve the country’s worst rushing attack to create balance for the incoming quarterback.
The Bears return seven starters on defense, but this may not be a good thing as Baylor was 110th in total defense. The Bears’ Achilles Heel came against the run, where they were ranked 113th by allowing over 191 YPG. The entire defensive line returns up front, and this should generate some pass rush while linebacker Joe Pawelek is looking to build on his spectacular freshman season. A problem area could be cornerback as starters C.J. Wilson and Anthony Arline are no longer with the team. Teams could look to expose this weakness because the Bears’ rushing defense should be much better than last season. Dwain Crawford will be needed to make a big impact in the secondary by moving to the rover position.
Punter Daniel Sepulveda has also graduated, leaving a huge void in the nation’s third-best punting scheme, which is extremely important in the battle for field position. The Bears were pummeled in their final four games to end the 2006 season, and they face Texas, Texas Tech and a trip to Oklahoma in their last five games of the 2007 campaign. Baylor should be good for another four-win season, but that won’t shake the foundation of the Big 12.
