Ohio State Buckeyes - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
It's safe to say no one had a longer offseason than Ohio State. After exerting dominance over the football world for an entire season, the Buckeyes' dream season turned into a nightmare when Florida got at them in the BCS title game. Now, with Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Gonzalez and Antonio Pittman all gone to the pros, head coach Jim Tressel must find a way to overcome last year's bitter disappointment by using a new cast of characters and just 10 returning starters.
On offense, tailback Chris Wells should carry the bulk of the load. With Tressel looking to get back to a more traditional offense, it could be a breakout season for him. The Buckeyes offense returns split end Brian Robiskie, tackles Kirk Barton and Alex Boone as well as guard Steve Rehring. All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis is back as is Marcus Freeman, who trailed only Laurinaitis with 71 tackles last year. Team sack leader Vernon Gholston is back at defensive end, but he is the only one from that line to return. All-Big Ten cornerback Malcolm Jenkins will anchor the secondary. Perhaps the biggest question mark for Ohio State is at its most important position. Todd Boeckman, Robbie Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton are all competing for the position. Boeckman, who has been in the system the longest and has the most experience, could be considered the early favorite to replace Smith. Robiskie, Brian Hartline and Ray Small should be solid targets for whoever is throwing the ball, but this is another position that needs development.
With out-of-conference games against Youngstown State, Akron and Washington, Ohio State has a schedule made for a powerhouse in need of some retooling. If things go well, they could make another run at the top prize. Buckeye faithful shouldn’t hold their breath.
