Michigan State Spartans - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

Did you know they played football at Michigan State? Based on their 1-7 conference record last season, it would seem some of the players didn't either. That result cost head coach John Smith his job and Mark Dantonio, at one point an assistant for the Spartans and most recently the head man at Cincinnati, will now try to turn things around. He inherits a team that returns six starters on both offense and defense but is missing its top three receivers from a year ago.

A new quarterback (most likely Brian Hoyer) will direct a running game that will likely be the main source of offense. Look for Javon Ringer to lead that charge, though Jehuu Caulcrick and A.J. Jimmerson should also see time in the backfield. T.J. Williams, Terry Love and Devin Thomas could make for some interesting options at wide receiver but the offensive line isn't very deep, which could spell trouble. The defense is terrible and needs much work. The defensive line will need an overhaul. The loss of starting tackles Clifton Ryan and David Stanton make it even more crucial to find some way to plug gaping holes in the run-stop effort. SirDarean Adams moves to weakside linebacker and will be heavily relied on to make things happen. The team will keep its collective fingers crossed that middle linebacker Kaleb Thornhill will be healthy after rehabbing knee and shoulder injuries and will be able to continue his steady contribution.

The tandem of free safety Otis Wiley and strong safety Nehemiah Warrick might mean Michigan State's secondary will actually have some bite. Wiley led the team in tackles last season with 94 while Warrrick was fifth with 45. Expect the Spartans to finish at or near the bottom of the Big Ten and out of the bowl games.
