West Virginia Mountaineers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

Last year, the West Virginia Mountaineers had more in mind than just a Big East Conference title. With a pair of Heisman hopefuls and an accommodating schedule, WVU had designs on a berth in the national championship game. With a 7-0 start, all was going as planned, until the Mountaineers lost at Louisville. But even after that, West Virginia was one of several one-loss teams still in the running for a shot at the title. But the Mountaineers got upset at home by South Florida, and that was the end of that. WVU regrouped to beat Rutgers in the regular-season finale, and then rallied to defeat Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl to finish the season at 11-2 overall. The Mountaineers then had to fend off a lucrative offer from Alabama to lure head coach Rich Rodriguez away. Fortunately for them, Rodriguez said “no thanks” to the Crimson Tide's green.

WVU is 50-24 in six seasons under Rodriguez, 21-3 over the last two years and the Mountaineers return 16 starters from last season, eight on each side of the ball. On offense, the returners include the trio of QB Patrick White, RB Steve Slaton and WR/KR Darius Reynaud. White and Slaton, both just juniors, combined to rush for nearly 3,000 yards last season to help them rank second nationally in rushing. WVU lost a couple of good ones from the offensive line in Rimington Trophy winning center Dan Mozes and All-Big East guard Jeremy Sheffey. And they'll have to replace two-thirds of their linebacking corps, and shore up a defensive backfield that got a little loose at times last year.

The Mountaineers are a Top 10 team, and a threat to run the table. They have to visit South Florida, Rutgers and Cincinnati, but the Big One this season will likely be Nov. 8 against Louisville in Morgantown.
