Army Black Knights Team Info :
The Black Knights were winless in their final six games of the 2006 season, including a disappointing 26-14 loss at home to bitter rivals Navy. Stan Brock inherits 12 returning starters – six on each side of the ball – in his first season as Army head coach. Brock’s first tough call will be to decide between David Pevoto (6 TD, 14 INT) and Carson Williams (4 TD, 10 INT) at quarterback. Pevoto is the senior and Williams has the better arm, but they turned the ball over far too much for Army to have a chance down the stretch. The Black Knights were 112th in the nation in total offense, and this season could see Brock take the team in more of a running direction.
Backs Wesley McMahand (150 attempts, 654 yards, 4 TD) and Tony Moore (104 attempts, 399 yards, 5 TD) are going to have to take their games to the next level, at least until the quarterbacks can cut down on their interceptions. The offensive line could also take a hit with only two starters coming back. Linebackers Cason Shrode and Barrett Scruggs combined for 200 tackles between them last season, and their graduation is a severe blow to Army’s defense, which was near the bottom of the NCAA in scoring defense (96th), rushing defense (115th), and sacks (116th). Safety Caleb Campbell returns to a secondary that tallied a grand total of four interceptions last season, another thing that Brock would like to improve upon.
Army manages to avoid Notre Dame on its schedule, but they still face a difficult back-to-back on the road at Wake Forest and Boston College in late September. The Black Knights then travel to the ACC again in October to Georgia Tech, and are also on the road to Air Force and Navy. Brock’s rookie season at Army will be a definite challenge.
