North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina Tar Heels Odds, Lines & Betting

Heading into last season, the North Carolina Tar Heels had hopes of jumping into the middle of the pack in the ACC and maybe even grabbing a minor bowl bid. But UNC disappointed from the start, winning just one of their first 10 games (against Div 1-AA Furman by three points) before knocking off North Carolina State and Duke to end the season. So after compiling a 27-45 record over six seasons, head coach John Bunting was canned, replaced by former Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis.

Davis is back in coaching after going 51-20 at Miami with four bowl wins, and don't forget that the Hurricanes went undefeated and won the national title the year after he left. But Davis was just 24-35 with the Browns. Initially, he won't have a whole lot to work with. UNC returns six starters to an offense that ranked 101st overall last year and 91st in rushing, and four starters on a defense that ranked 92nd overall and 100th vs. the run. And a minus-11 turnover ratio didn't help. UNC boasts solid receivers and returns three starters on the D line. Senior Joe Dailey, who started seven games at QB last year, is now a receiver, so redshirt freshman T.J. Yates will vie with sophomore Cam Sexton. The running back slots are wide open, as is most of the back seven on defense.

The schedule includes road trips to South Florida, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, and home games with Virginia, Miami, South Carolina, Maryland and the Big One with Duke. This will be a great challenge for Davis, and it could be the start of something big. Davis is known as a good recruiter, and this program could explode with success. But asking UNC to contend in the ACC this year is asking too much.
