Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Going into the 2006 season, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets had 15 returning starters and hopes of contending for the ACC title. And thanks to some slippage in Miami and Virginia Tech, the Ramblin' Wreck did just that, winning the Coastal Division before falling to Wake Forest in the ACC championship game. But what started with a victorious bang ended with a losing whimper at Tech. The Jackets sat 9-2 before losing their last three games to hated Georgia, to Wake Forest (in that conference title game) and to West Virginia in the Gator Bowl. All three losses were by a field goal. Throw in the season-opening four-point loss to Notre Dame, and the “what ifs” begin to pour in. Nonetheless, it was the Jackets' best season in their five years under head coach Chan Gailey, and their 10th straight year with a bowl appearance.
This year, the Yellow Jackets return 17 starters and both kickers. But among the guys they lost on offense were QB Reggie Ball, who only started 49 games for the Wreck, and WR Calvin Johnson, the second pick in April's NFL draft. Pure passer Taylor Bennett, who threw for 326 yards in the Gator Bowl after Ball got suspended, is the favorite to take over at QB, and the offense returns RB Tashard Choice (almost 1,500 rushing yards last year) and four starters on the line.
Eight more starters return to a defense that ranked 27th overall and 20th stopping the run, although there are some questions about the defensive backfield. 2007 sees the Yellow Jackets hit the road for games at Notre Dame, Virginia, Maryland and Miami, and home dates with Boston College, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Georgia. Gailey is 37-27 running the Wreck, but he'd better do something soon about his 0-5 record against the Bulldogs.
