Florida State Seminoles - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
It was inevitable that Florida State would eventually fall from the pedestal it shared with Florida, Texas and America’s other perennial college football powerhouses. And it's no coincidence that the fall happened just as head coach Bobby Bowden nears the end of his record-setting career in Tallahassee.
In their 30th season under Bowden, FSU was expected to vie for another ACC title. Instead, the Seminoles were a disappointing 7-6, and only got that seventh win thanks to a watered-down bowl system. Florida State lost four of its last six regular-season games, including a 30-0 whitewash at the hands of Wake Forest, at home, no less. They capped the season by beating a mediocre UCLA team in the Emerald Bowl. And yet their other five losses were all by seven points or less. The defense was just fine, ranking 18th in A-1 ball overall and 12th vs. the run. But the offense vanished, ranking 70th overall last year and 103rd in rushing. Throw in a minus-8 turnover margin and it was the worst season at FSU since Bowden's first season back in 1976! And over the last two seasons, the 'Noles have gone 15-11 overall and 8-8 in a conference they've dominated for 15 years.
This season, Florida State returns 13 starters, including RB Antone Smith, a solid pair of wideouts and the entire defensive backfield. Junior QB Drew Weatherford also returns, but his status as the starter is dubious heading into training camp as the Noles implement a more run-heavy offensive scheme. The schedule is brutal, with road games at Clemson, Colorado, Wake Forest, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Florida, and a neutral-field bout with Alabama in Jacksonville. Florida State has had a hell of a run. But at this point, this program is in dire need of a fresh start.
