Duke Blue Devils - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

Duke is a basketball school. That’s the most diplomatic way of introducing the Blue Devil football program, which has lost 20 games in a row. They haven't won a game since beating Division I-AA VMI in the third game of the 2005 season. And they haven't beaten a 1-A opponent or an ACC foe since upsetting Clemson in November of '04. Last season's 0-12 campaign was book-ended by a home shut-out loss to Division 1-AA Richmond in the opener and a 45-44  loss to rival North Carolina on a blocked extra-point in the waning moments of the finale.

At least they were consistent. Duke ranked 105th in total offense last year, and 105th in total defense. The Blue Devils are 5-34 in three and a half seasons under head coach Ted Roof, roughly the same ineptitude shown by the Dukies (7-45) in the four plus seasons before that. This year, Duke returns all 11 starters on offense and six more on defense. Thaddeus Lewis is the incumbent at QB after starting 10 games in an emergency situation as a freshman last year. And '05 starter Zack Asack is also back after being suspended for all of last season. The Blue Devils have decent receivers, which will help when new OC Peter Vaas - Brady Quinn's QB coach last year at Notre Dame - implements a more pass-oriented attack.

The defense loses key members of the front seven and two starting cornerbacks. Duke will be better than last year, but will it result in any victories? Their best chance is hosting UConn in the season opener. The Dukies then visit Virginia, Miami, Florida State and Notre Dame, and host Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia Tech, all part of a run of eight straight games vs. '06 bowl teams. One win would be an improvement. Two would be cause for celebration.
