Clemson Tigers - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Didn't the Tigers have it backwards last year? Traditionally, Clemson disappoints throughout most of the season, then hauls coach Tommy Bowden's butt out of the fire with a big win or two at the end. But last year, the Tigers started out 7-1, and then lost three of their last four games to miss out on a marquee bowl. Deflated, they lost to an inferior Kentucky team in the Music City Bowl. Clemson boasts eight straight winning seasons under Bowden, but the Tigers - even with all the talent they seem to have on a regular basis - haven't broken through with that one big season (they haven't won the ACC since 1991). Which is why Bowden, it seems, has been on the hot seat almost since he took over.
Last season, the Tigers ranked 15th nationally in total offense, fifth in rushing (218 YPG), and 13th in total defense. Yet they still managed to lose five games. This year the Tigers return 11 starters, seven on defense but only four on offense. Clemson lost starting QB Will Proctor, who will probably be replaced by junior Cullen Harper, although incoming freshman Willy Korn will get a look. The backfield is solid with the combo of James Davis and C.J. Spiller. And while the Tigers lost four starting offensive linemen, seniors will probably fill several of those holes.
The defense will again be very good. They lose both their starting cornerbacks, but senior LB Tramaine Billie, who missed all of last year with an ankle injury, is back. Clemson opens this season with a Labor Day Bowden Bowl vs. Florida State, and should start 3-0. The schedule isn't imposing, with trips to Georgia Tech, Maryland and South Carolina, and home dates with Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Boston College. The Tigers need a breakthrough season, because another 7-5 campaign might mean the end for Coach Bowden’s regime.
