Washington State Cougars - NCAA Basketball Betting
Washington State Cougars won just 11 games all of last season. They dropped 14 of their last 16, and went 4-14 to finish in last place in the PAC 10 Conference.
Then, in the offseason head coach Dick Bennett, who was summoned to Pullman to pull this program up out of the cellar, retired, turning the job over to his 37-year-old son Tony, who had never been a head coach at any level.
The Cougars won their first seven games under the new Coach Bennett, and 15 of their first 17. And one of those losses was by three points at UCLA. By the second weekend in February, WSU had already won 20 games, hitting that mark for the first time since 1993-94 (the same season of its last NCAA tournament appearance), and was ranked for the first time in 15 years. And the Cougars swept both games from Arizona!
Something was definitely going on. Junior point guard Derrick Low, an excellent long-range shooter, broke out this season, leading the team in scoring at 15 points per game. Junior forward Robbie Cowgill, a lanky 6-10 scrapper, might be the Cougars’ best all-around player. Junior Kyle Weaver, an athletic swingman, chips in to the tune of about ten points, five boards and five assists a game, leads the team in steals and ranks second in blocked shots.
Senior forward Ivory Clark contributes nine points and five rebounds a game and leads the team in rejections, and 6-7 sophomore forward Daven Harmeling provides another 3-point threat.
Washington State takes care of the ball, averaging about ten turnovers a game, and plays great team defense. They do, however, get outrebounded often. This team is – as you might expect – similar to those gritty UW-Green Bay and Wisconsin teams that Dick Bennett used to head up.
Who the hell wanted to play them in a one-and-out tournament scenario? Nobody.
Derrick Low – Wazoo's Steve Nash.
Kyle Weaver – Ranks second on the team in scoring, 1st in rebounds, assists and steals, second in blocks... you get the idea.
Robbie Cowgill – Big, at 6-10, but light, and can get pushed around.
