Southern Mississippi head coach Larry Eustachy, now in his fourth season at the school, has watched this year’s team take a slight step backwards from the 2006-07 team that went a respectable 20-11 overall and 9-7 in Conference USA play and tied for fourth in the conference.

While the Golden Eagles have fielded a respectable offense that is ranked 79th in the nation, averaging 73.2 points per game this season, they have been mediocre at best on defense, allowing opponents to score 67.6 points per game, (148th), while making 43.2 percent of their collective shots, (144th) and a whopping 35.9 percent from three-point distance, (227th).

The Golden Eagles, who won five of their last seven regular-season games to record their first winning season since 2000-01, have shot a blistering 45.5 percent from the field as a team, (105th) but have made their free throws at an inexcusable 66.7 percent clip collectively.

With this team featuring four freshmen, five sophomores and just two juniors and two seniors on the roster, it’s easy to see that this team will likely be able to build on the success of this season – and that of two consecutive winning seasons – starting with the 2008-09 season.
