Southern Methodist Mustangs - NCAA Basketball Betting

Southern Methodist University head coach, Matt Doherty, now in his second year at the helm of what was once a perennial basketball powerhouse in the national rankings and BetUS.com Sportsbook, has watched his team take a step backwards from the 2006-07 season, currently struggling with an 10-19 overall record and 4-12 Conference USA record.

The Mustangs have depended heavily on four freshmen and are really lacking in athleticism and overall depth this season. SMU has had big trouble scoring the ball this season, averaging just 63.9 points per contest, (269th) while making just 42.2 percent of their field goals, (250th) and 33.9 percent of their three-pointers (221st). Heck, the Mustangs, have also struggled from the free throw line like you wouldn’t believe, making just 65.9 percent from the charity stripe (272nd).

On the other side of the ball, the Mustangs have been a better unit than they have been on offense, but not much better, allowing 70.5 points per game, (217th) but have limited their opponents to just 43.2 percent shooting from the field, (148th) and 35.5 percent from three-point distance, (201st). Surprisingly, SMU has been one of the better defensive rebounding teams in the nation, pulling down 23.2 boards per contest, (72nd).

The Mustangs have had just two players average double figures in scoring this season, senior guard Jon Killen, (12.6 ppg) and junior center Bamba Fall, (11.5 ppg).

For the most part, the Mustangs have played competitive basketball this season. Unfortunately they are just too young and just not good enough to compete with the major powers in the conference right now.
