Now in his eighth season at Memphis University, veteran collegiate head coach John Calipari has built the men’s basketball program into a perennial national powerhouse that 33-4 overall in 2006-07.

At the time of this writing, the Tigers were ranked second in the nation with a 30-1 overall record and 16-0 mark in Conference USA play.

Calipari has built the Tigers into one of the most entertaining teams in the country to watch with their pressure defense and fast-breaking style of play that features nine players in the regular rotation and has helped three Tigers average double figures in scoring this season, led by athletic junior shooting guard Chris Douglas-Roberts who averages 17.5 points per game.

Memphis has averaged a whopping 80.2 points per game, good for 17th in the nation, while making 46.5 percent of its field goals, (60th). The Tigers have shot just 34.4 percent from long distance this season, (206th) and made a pitiful 58.6 percent of its free throws, though they are averaging a whopping 13.2 offensive rebounds per game, good for 11th in the country.

The Tigers have really excelled on defense this season, holding their opponents to just 61.5 points per game, (29th) while limiting their opponents to a dismal, 37.8 field goal percentage which ranks fourth in the country.

Memphis also defends the three-point line very well, allowing opponents to make just 30.4 percent of their treys, (17th) while pulling down a whopping 25.9 defensive rebounds per game, good for eighth in the nation.

With just two seniors on the roster – and a solid recruiting class on its way next season, Calipari looks like he has built another national powerhouse that will stay that way for years to come.
