The Seattle Supersonics are hoping their huge off-season makeover pays big dividends for the franchise at some point in the not-too-distant future.

After a sub par 31-51 season last year, the Sonics lucked up and landed the No. 2 overall pick in the lottery and landed Collegiate Player of the Year, Kevin Durant. The Sonics also made the bold move of trading superstar shooting guard Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics for point guard Delonte West, veteran swingman Wally Sczerbiak and the rights to the No.5 pick in the draft, which they promptly used on former Georgetown star forward Jeff Green.

The Sonics also made some sweeping moves in the front office this off-season, naming former San Antonio Spurs assistant GM Sam Presti, their new general manager, who in turn, turned around and hired former San Antonio assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo as the team’s new head coach. The Sonics also lost longtime forward Rashard Lewis in free agency.

On the court, Seattle will start Luke Ridnour at the point, and while Ridnour has been good, averaging 11.0 PPG and 5.2 APG last season, he is not in the upper tier of NBA point guards and may never be. Durant will likely start at shooting guard, with Szcerbiak backing up the talented rookie. Veteran, Earl Watson will play plenty at the point and West should also work his way in as a reserve at both positions at times.

Up front, the Sonics may play Durant at small forward and start Szcerbiak at shooting guard. If not, Seattle could start Green at the small forward position. Seattle will also play Nick Collison at power forward and has added veteran Kurt Thomas to go along with Chris Wilcox.

The Sonics may take their lumps this season, but they could also turn out to be one of the premier teams in all of basketball in a few seasons.
