The San Antonio Spurs were led to their fourth NBA title in nine years last season by the best low post player in the world and arguably the greatest power forward of all-time, Tim Duncan.
Listening to the Spurs talk however, you’d think the team was knocked out in the first round of last season’s playoffs. After sweeping the overmatched Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, the Spurs likely, immediately, rededicated themselves to thrashing their opponents in 2007-08 as well.
Unfortunately for their opponents, the team returns the same core group of veterans that led the Spurs to last season’s Larry O’Brien trophy.
Finals MVP Tony Parker is back at the point, along with fellow all-star, Manu Ginobili at the ‘two’. Parker has improved some aspect of his now-frightening game every season and the left-handed Ginobili is one of the most difficult players in the entire league to defend with his ‘whirling dervish’ style of play. The Spurs have one of the best sets of backup guards in the league with veterans, Michael Finley and Brent Barry coming off the bench for Parker or Ginobili. The Spurs also added Ime Udoka, a free agent who played for the Portland Trailblazers last season. Veteran backup point guard Jacque Vaughn is reliable and can hit the open shot when he occasionally takes one.
Up front, the Spurs have the ‘Big Fundamental,’ Duncan, a nine-time All-Star, 10-time All-Defensive team recipient, two-time NBA MVP and three-time Finals MVP. My personal opinion is that Duncan is already the greatest power forward of all-time and still has a lot more left to offer the Spurs.
Duncan’s footwork is arguably second only to former Boston Celtics legend Kevin McHale and his leadership may be second to none, but the thing that makes Duncan special clearly rests above his shoulders.
Duncan’s overall willingness to become an unassuming cog in a well-oiled working machine – and his subsequent relationship with head coach Gregg Popovich - has led the team to follow in his mold of level-headed superstars who care only about one thing – winning the championship title every season.
Joining Duncan on the frontline is small forward Bruce Bowen, the league’s premier perimeter defender and the two-headed center combination of Fabricio Oberto and Francisco Elson.
Robert "Big Shot Rob" Horry is also back for another season of game-deciding three-pointers and postseason heroics
