The Sacramento Kings are ‘starting over’ just one season after claiming they idiotically hired former NBA head coaching failure Eric Musselman to lead the team in a new direction after firing former head coach Rick Adelman despite the fact that Adelman had built the Kings into perennial title contenders in Sacramento.
The Kings stumbled badly out of the gate under Musselman and floundered aimlessly all season en route to a dismal 33-49 season. Sacramento management immediately recognized their major blunder following the regular season and promptly fired Musselman, replacing him with former NBA star and New Mexico State head coach, Reggie Theus.
Theus has already reportedly changed the atmosphere in Sacramento, demanding that his players play defense and hustle at all times. Theus inherits a team that has some talented players and may not be as far from getting back into contention in the Western Conference as some people may think.
Sacramento will start Mike Bibby at the point and Bibby should be thoroughly motivated after suffering through a sub par injury-filled season last year. Alongside Bibby, the Kings found out last season that they have a star in the making in shooting guard Kevin Martin.
Backig up the starters, Sacramento will turn to veteran John Salmons and young guards Francisco Garcia and Quincy Douby. Salmons is the best perimeter defender of the bunch, which could be a problem for the Kings at some point.
Sacramento’s frontcourt has the potential to be one of the better units in the league with steady veterans, Kenny Thomas and Shareef Abdur-Rahim splitting time at the power forward position and joining multi-talented all-star center Brad Miller. If Theus can properly motivate Sacramento’s best all-around player, enigmatic forward Ron Artest, the Kings could surprise a lot of teams.
Sacramento also acquired former New Jersey Nets rebounding machine Mikki Moore in the off-season and has a promising young center in Spencer Hawes. While the Kings won’t be able to compete with the powerhouse teams that reside in the Western Conference, an improvement on last season – and a shot at the postseason – is a very real possibility.
