After lucking up into the top pick in the NBA lottery – and subsequently selecting former Ohio State center Greg Oden with the No.1 overall pick – the Portland Trailblazers were looking at one of the brightest futures of any NBA franchise in the league.
Now, after the discovery that Oden has a knee injury that will require microfracture surgery and cause him to miss his entire rookie season, the Blazers have gone from an upbeat bunch to a worried organization that is secretly praying that Oden can return next season to his prior form.
Even with Oden sitting out this season, the Trailblazers still have a roster stacked with players bursting with potential.
The Blazers have a solid young point guard in Jarret Jack, who started 79 games last season, but head coach Nate McMillan wants improved play from the lead guard position and went out and acquired heady veteran Steve Blake, who will likely take the starting position away from Jack.
Last season’s Rookie of the Year, shooting guard Brandon Roy, has a full season of experience under his belt and looks like a future all-star in the making, though teams will be focusing on stopping the poised youngster more often than last season when he took the league by storm. Portland also added rookie guard Taurean Green who should see some minimal playing time this season.
Even with the loss of Oden hanging over the franchise like a dark cloud, the Blazers have a promising frontcourt. Second-year power forward LaMarcus Aldridge has the stuff to be a flat-out star and Portland also acquired another promising young power forward/center in Channing Frye when they traded former power forward Zach Randolph to the New York Knicks this offseason.
Veterans, James Jones, Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster are all fighting for the starting small forward position and the Jazz will use veterans Raef LaFrentz and Darius Miles (when he returns from injury) as deep reserves.
