The Philadelphia 76ers went 30-29 after trading away longtime superstar guard Allen Iverson to the Denver Nuggets for point guard Andre Miller and a couple of draft picks last season.
Philly’s surprising second-half run also included an impressive 18-11 mark after the all-star break. The Sixers also came to the conclusion that they are going to build their young team around the vast talents of athletic small forward Andre Iguoadala who finished the 2006-07 season averaging 19.6 points, 5.5 boards and 6.2 assists following the trade of Iverson.
Even with their impressive finish last season, the Sixers will take their lumps in 2007-08 as the young team continues to learn the ropes the hard way – by getting pounded by the league’s more experienced teams.
The Sixers have one of the league’s most underrated point guards in veteran Andre Miller and also has a player I have liked for a few years now, in explosive, but oft-injured shooting guard Willie Green. Philadelphia will also rely on sharp-shooting backup, Kyle Korver to continue to supply the team with consistent outside shooting and may have struck gold with young guard Louis Williams and athletic second-year forward Rodney Carney, who both should see plenty of minutes in the regular rotation this season.
The majority of the Sixers’ problems lie in the frontcourt where they will depend mostly on underachieving center Samuel Dalembert, and veteran rebounder Reggie Evans.
Neither player can score the ball from two-feet away, but at least Evans will help Philadelphia’s anemic production in the rebounding department. Dalembert is a big body that can block shots consistently (when he’s not goaltending too much).
Athletic first round draft pick, forward, Thaddeus Young, the No. 12 overall pick in the draft, and 7-foot forward, Jason Smith, another first-round pick this year, could also see some playing time in the rotation at some point this season, likely in the second half after Philadelphia falls out of postseason contention.
