The Orlando Magic are hoping that the offseason acquisitions the team made – after its initial tumultuous start – will be enough to get them out of the first round and into an extended stay in the eastern conference postseason in 2007-08.
Gone are former head coach Brian Hill and although the franchise didn’t land the head coach it initially went after - Florida Gator head coach Billy Donovan – Orlando rebounded nicely by landing veteran NBA coach Stan Van Gundy.
In addition to landing Van Gundy, the Magic also brought in 6-10 sharpshooter, Rashard Lewis to pair with young man-child, Dwight Howard.
While Lewis and his 22 points per game will be a big help to a team that lacks many legitimate scorers, the Magic need for Howard to continue his improvement, particularly on the offensive end where he still needs more polish, while getting more significant contributions from the team’s remaining starters and substitutes.
Starting point guard Jameer Nelson averaged 13 points per game last season, but need to improve on his assist-to-turnover ration in the worst way. While Nelson’s strengths out-weigh his weaknesses, the former Naismith Player of the Year will need to do a better job of getting the ball to Howard – and Lewis in particular – where each is comfortable and can player can be effective.
The shooting guard position may be a problem for the Magic if second-year sniper J.J. Redick isn’t ready to grab the stating position by the throat.
Veterans, Trevor Ariza and Keyon Dooling will backup up Nelson and Redick at both guard spots, but neither is what could be considered as starting NBA material.
The Magic might have lost a lot more than they ever figured when they decided to let free agent forward Darko Milicic walk away. Orlando appears to be one of the thinnest teams in the league in the frontcourt after Howard and Lewis. Adonal Foyle, James Augustine and Marcin Gorat are mediocre at best. Orlando does have one of the best pure shooters in the game on the roster in small forward Hedo Turkoglu.
