The New York Knicks “improved” to 33-49 after going 23-59 in 2005-06 and will have a chance to get even better this season with the addition of 20-and-10 power forward Zach Randolph.
If head coach Isiah Thomas can get enigmatic point guard Stephon Marbury and underachieving center Eddy Curry on the same page as Randolph, despite his numerous character issues, the Kicks could have a formidable trio in the making.
Of course, the Knicks have plenty of questions at the two-guard and small forward spots, where several players will be given an opportunity to shine in 2007-08.
Starting shooting guard Jamal Crawford is a player that can be frighteningly good or equally maddening, depending on which night of the week it is. Veteran Fred Jones will spell Crawford. At small forward, the Knicks will start veteran three-point shooter, Quentin Richardson while Jared Jeffries and Renaldo Balkman will play the meaningful backup minutes. The backup to Marbury this season may be hard-nosed defender, 6-5 second-year player, Mardy Collins. Collins came on strong down the stretch last season when given minutes and will likely split the backup duties with Nate Robinson.
Thomas will have to find a way to get the Knicks’ most energetic player, power forward David Lee, on the floor more often with the acquisition of Randolph. Lee’s intangibles and apparent enthusiasm had GMs all over the league inquiring about his services this past offseason.
