The New Orleans Hornets never had a chance to reach respectability last season with the team’s top three scorers, point guard Chris Paul, small forward David West, and veteran shooter Peja Stojakovic missing a combined 117 games last season because of injuries. Still, the Hornets never quit on head coach Byron Scott, winning 39 games despite their depleted roster.

Now the Hornets head into the 2007-08 season with renewed hopes – and better health. The Hornets have one of the best young point guards in the game in former Rookie of the Year, Chris Paul. Despite his health issues, Paul managed to average over 17 points and almost 9 assists per game.

New Orleans added veteran Morris Peterson who will start at the shooting guard spot and has all-around veterans Bobby Jackson and Jannero Pargo to back up at each position. Up front, the Hornets got a solid season out of forward Tyson Chandler, who averaged over 12 rebounds and nearly two blocks per game last season. If Chandler ever learns how to make shots on a consistent basis, he could turn out to be the dominating player experts predicted he would be when he was in the seventh grade.

If Stojakovic can make a successful return from his nagging back injury last season, the Hornets will have more offensive firepower than they had in all of 2006-07.

Forward David West is an underrated do-it-all player who averaged a solid 18.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season in 52 contests.

In order for the Hornets to really make some strides this upcoming season, they will need to stay healthy first and foremost. If not, they will likely find themselves right back in next year’s lottery.
