The New Jersey Nets are coming off a mediocre season in which they finished an exact .500 during the regular season. The Nets made their offseason a bit more bearable by beating the Atlantic division champions, the Toronto Raptors, 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs before falling to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference semifinals by a similar 4-2 deficit.

While New Jersey will enter the 2007-08 season with the same veteran trio of point guard Jason Kidd, and swingmen, Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter, the team will also face many of the same problems that have prevented them from being a legitimate eastern conference contender the past two or three seasons – a lack of competent, physical, low post players and a consistent effort from the athletic but underachieving Carter.

New Jersey is also painfully thin at each of these stars’ respective backup positions, starting at point guard where young Marcus Williams is not quite ready for prime time and will be coming off a foot injury to start the season. Athletic wing man Antoine Wright will spell either Carter or Jefferson, but the Nets are a train wreck waiting to happen if either of their starting trio of stars goes down with an injury.

New Jersey is hoping its offseason additions will help shore up one of the weakest frontcourts in the entire NBA last season. The team signed free agent Jamaal Magloire who could replace veteran Jason Collins as the starter at center. New Jersey may have found a gem in rookie forward Sean Williams, a natural shot-blocker who may see some meaningful minutes in his rookie season.

New Jersey’s most important player this season may be forward Nenad Krstic, who missed the last 56 games last season after tearing the ACL in his left knee. If Kristic can regain his old form, the Nets could surprise some folks a bit. Bostjan Nachbar and Josh Boone will also see minutes in the regular rotation.
