It’s a new day in Minnesota and the beginning of a new era with the trade of franchise star Kevin Garnett having been traded to the Boston Celtics for a slew of talented young players, most notably, young power forward Al Jefferson.
Not only did the Timberwolves acquire a boatload of talented, but young, players from the Celtics, but the team also has a at least one or two other players that have a shot at stardom that didn’t come over in the Garnett deal.
In the backcourt, the Timberwolves have a player I love in combination guard Randy Foye, who will likely start at the point guard position this season alongside veteran swingman Ricky Davis, the incumbent at shooting guard.
Davis may become expendable at some point in the very near future with the Timberwolves selecting athletic swingman and defensive standout Corey Brewer out of the University of Florida this season and high-flying Gerald Green coming over in the Celtics trade.
Minnesota may also have big problems at backup point guard where former high school phenom Sebastian Telfair has been a major bust throughout his short NBA career.
In the frontcourt, the Timberwolves are relying on Jefferson to elevate his game to another level this season. Joining the young power forward on Minnesota’s front line are veterans Juwan Howard, Mark Madsen and Theo Ratliff. Youngsters Ryan Gomes and Craig Smith will also see regular minutes in Minnesota’s rotation.
Maybe it’s me, but even though I know the Timberwolves are building for the long haul, I see big trouble for this team in the near-future. By the time many of the young players on the roster are blossoming into consistent NBA contributors, many of the team’s current players will likely have bolted for the greener pastures, warmer temperatures and better chances at actually winning an NBA title with another franchise.
Besides, didn’t the Timberwolves just grind one gifted power forward into the dirt for a dozen seasons? Here’s hoping Jefferson’s tenure with the Wolves turns out to be a lot better than KG’s ever did.
