On paper, the Milwaukee Bucks appear to be one of the top young teams in the league as far as near-future potential is concerned – and that assessment may not be far off the mark if new head coach Larry Krystowiak and general manager Larry Harris have anything to do with it.
Harris made sure to re-sign two of the team’s most important players in starting point guard Mo Williams and his backup, Charlie Bell after the Miami Heat made each restricted free agent an attractive offer to leave Milwaukee.
Joining Williams (17.3 points and 6.1 assists per game) in the team’s explosive starting backcourt is perennial all-star shooting guard, Michael Redd, arguably the best pure shooter on the planet not named Ray Allen and an outright scorer who averaged over 26 points per game last season.
Milwaukee would also appear to have one of the most promising young frontcourts in all of basketball with No. 6 overall pick Yi Jianlian, a power forward with small forward skills, joining power forward Charlie Villanueva, athletic small forward Bobby Simmons and centers Andrew Bogut and Dan Gadzuric on the front line.
If the Bucks are to improve in 2007-08, a very real likelihood that was increased with the hiring of Krystowiak, they will need Redd, Williams, Villanueva and Bogut to stay healthy far more often than the quartet has been recently.
With the balance of power clearly shifting in the eastern conference, the Bucks may have an opportunity to surpass even their own expectations in 2007-08.
