After winning the 2005-06 NBA title, the Miami Heat fell back to earth in a big way last season, posting a record that was just six games over .500, before getting swept out of the playoffs in the first round at the hands of the young Chicago Bulls.
While the Heat’s best player, superstar guard Dwyane Wade, suffered a devastating dislocated shoulder – and center Shaquille O’Neal battled both, knee injuries – and complacency – Miami was exposed last season for the team that they are – an aging, limited bunch that needs to get younger and better at several positions if they are going to get back to being a legitimate threat to win the NBA championship.
The bad news for Miami is that their roster hasn’t changed much from last season – at least not in a positive sense. Miami suffered what could turn out to be a bigger-than-expected loss by parting ways with sniper Jason Kapono while picking up aging veteran Penny Hardaway and mediocre point guard Smush Parker.
Miami is also counting on aging veterans Antoine Walker, Alonzo Mourning and Jason Williams to stay healthy and make significant contributions this season as well as power forward Udonis Haslem, arguably the team’s second-best player now. Young players, Wayne Simien, Dorrell Wright and Daequan Cook will also get the chance to play regular minutes in Miami’s rotation this season.
