The Vancouver Grizzlies finished last year with the league's worst record last season, so this is clearly a team that has nowhere to go but up.

The Grizzlies have made some sweeping changes, both in the front office and on the court. First, Vancouver ownership hired former Boston Celtics GM Chris Wallace to take over the franchise’s direction and then Wallace hired a new head coach in former Phoenix Suns assistant Mark Iavaroni who immediately installed an up-tempo offense reminiscent of the team he came from, the Phoenix Suns.

While the Grizzlies certainly don’t have the players to run Phoenix’s fast-paced offense to perfection, the team did score a coup by selecting a point guard that could turn out to be a star in just a few seasons in former Ohio State lead guard Mike Conley, the No. 4 overall selection in this summer’s draft.

While Conley is schedule to start at the point, the Grizzlies have another promising point guard in last year's first round pick, former Villanova standout, Kyle Lowry. Veteran long-range sniper Mike Miller will start at the ‘two’ and the Grizzlies have also added Spanish star, Juan Carlos Navarro. Athletic small forward Rudy Gay will also see time at shooting guard this season. Up front, Vancouver has a ton of forwards, none of whom are complete players by any means, besides Gasol that is.

Stromile Swift is athletic but a classic underachiever. Hakim Warrick is a promising scorer, but needs to learn how to play defense in the worst way. Brian Cardinal, Casey Jacobsen, Andre Brown and free agent acquisition Darko Milicic add depth to this unit, which could still use a serious upgrade.

While the Grizzlies will improve over their dismal season from a year ago – and could contend for the final spot in the western conference playoffs, don’t expect too much out of this young team or you’ll be in for a big letdown.
