After enduring a weird, drama-filled offseason in which superstar shooting guard Kobe Bryant announced he wanted to be traded – and owner Jerry Buss recently said he’s still exploring the possibility – the Lakers head into the 2007-08 season with more question marks than almost any team in the league.
With Bryant almost guaranteed to be traded now before the February trading deadline, the Lakers entire season has suddenly become one big question mark
The Lakers parted ways with enigmatic point guard Smush Parker and re-acquired former point guard Derek Fisher who will likely start in the backcourt alongside Bryant.
Second-year player, Jordan Farmar will see significant minutes as Fisher’s backup with this year’s first round draft pick, Javaris Crittenton getting whatever minutes are remaining. Needless to say, the dynamics of the Lakers backcourt – and entire roster – will change dramatically should Bryant be traded.
Up front, the Lakers will start athletic, but perennial underachieving veteran, Lamar Odom, at the power forward position and the sweet-shooting veteran, Luke Walton at small forward.
The Lakers will have an open competition at center where another perennial underachiever, former No.1 overall selection, Kwame Brown, will battle for the starting position with promising youngster Andrew Bynum.
No matter what happens with Bryant, the Lakers are a .500 team at best, maybe slightly better, in the powerful Western Conference. Until this team either gets Bryant some legitimate help – or trades their now petulant star – expect the Lakers to compete for one of the final two spots in the western conference playoffs and not much more.
