If the Indiana Pacers can count on one thing for sure this season, it’s the fact that this is clearly a team in the midst of change – and from looking on the outside in – not pleasant changes either.

After dealing with rumors of trading power forward Jermaine O’Neal, the Pacers enter the 2007-08 season with nearly the same cast – and same problems – as last year’s team that fizzled down the stretch last season like a mouthful of ‘Pop Rocks’.

Unfortunately for the Pacers and new head coach Jim O’Brien, Indiana’s problems start right at the very beginning with inconsistent veteran point guard Jamaal Tinsley. As prone as Tinsley is to often making the spectacular play, he has also been an enigmatic player both on and off the court and one that has frequently been injured.

Though the Pacers are excited about the acquisition of former Orlando Magic backup point guard Travis Diener, The Pacers are really reaching if they expect Diener to instantly become a starting quality NBA point guard.

The Pacers also added Kareem Rush, a free agent veteran swingman who can score and will backup up starting two guard Danny Granger a player that is probably more suited for a traditional small forward role.

Speaking of small forwards, the Pacers also have another pair of veteran ‘threes’ in shooter, Mike Dunleavy and slasher, Marquis Daniels. O’Neal will man the power forward sot and will once again likely be an all-star without an all-star cast surrounding him.
The Pacers are painfully thin at the four behind O’Neal and at the five where the team will choose between seven-footer David Harrison or veterans, Troy Murphy or Jeff Foster.

Though the Pacers appear to be leaning toward starting Harrison, the overachieving and always hustling Foster is by far, my choice as the team’s starting center.
